It was 2008 and my property business had just become yet another victim of the global financial crisis.
I was left without an income and with jobs extremely hard to find I knew I had to do something fast.
I scoured the internet for ways to make money and soon found myself on well-known internet marketing forums buying product after product promising a “magic bullet” formula to make me rich beyond my wildest dreams!
I realised that this approach was getting me nowhere and that I was becoming a slave to my own desperation.
Whilst I’d been browsing these forums, I’d kept seeing people talk about SEO and, in particular, link building and how important it was to build links to your website. More links seemed to mean more money.
I set up some websites, bought some links (I was so black-hat back then!) and started making a little bit of money from affiliate marketing.
Like most SEO’s I increased my understanding and knowledge by reading blogs, browsing forums and testing on my own websites.
It was 2010 when I felt that I was in a position to start consulting for other businesses. I started working with some local businesses and successfully increased their annual revenue.
By the end of 2013 I had worked with businesses across the world.
I had also improved my approach, leaving my black and grey-hat past well behind and embracing an holistic approach to SEO, focusing on producing outstanding content, fixing technical issues, improving user experience and attracting quality, relevant links.
In 2014 I decided that I wanted to focus on working with one businesses at a time and moved in-house as an SEO specialist.
I’ve been working in-house for a variety of businesses and have been fortunate to work with some incredibly talented people, expanding my knowledge and expertise along the way.
